VR Experience: an overview
KeyWe was asked to develop a virtual experience that communicates the possibilities of refrigerated cargo and MSC’s commitment to sustainability. The approach is e-learning, but the technology also aims to be engaging, highly realistic, and therefore memorable.
MSC provides a dedicated area within its stands at every trade event around the world. Here, the public is invited to wear a Meta headset and virtually explore the terminal and warehouses where containers are handled. The experience is even more immersive thanks to the headset’s integrated audio, which virtually positions sounds in the three-dimensional space around the listener.
KeyWe's approach: user-friendly technology
For KeyWe, the key is user-friendly technology that draws its strength from simplicity.
The MSC VR Experience project has its own dedicated space within the stand, where users can stand and move around, even if only a few steps. Users are given time to get used to the headset and Virtual Reality, and are assisted by a member of staff who provides simple instructions and welcomes their ideas and feedback.
Realistic and customised design
The KeyWe team visited the relevant locations, such as terminals and warehouses, to study the processes and photograph the elements to be modelled in 3D. This was followed by the drafting of the experience script and the definition of the user path.
As with every other project, the in-house 3D department is directly responsible for modelling all the elements and creating the audio and multimedia content. The attention to detail and design allows for surprising realism.
The result is an informative but entertaining virtual journey, rich in information tags, animations and voiceovers. The user is invited to interact with the environment: their role is always active, at the centre of the experience.
Continuous support and feedback
MSC has already offered the VR experience at various trade events, with on-site support from KeyWe. From Europe to the United Arab Emirates and Southeast Asia, KeyWe has attended events providing technical support and guiding the public through the experience.
The feedback and impressions recorded have enabled continuous improvements to the application: tailor-made consulting that has characterised all phases of the project.
Hand tracking
In 2024, we evolved MSC’s virtual reality experiences with hand tracking on Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 headsets. Hand Tracking technology works by using the headsets’ inside-out cameras to detect the position and orientation of the hands and the arrangement of the fingers. Once detected, computer vision algorithms monitor the movement and orientation of the hands.
The aim is to eliminate the need for controllers, which are not very intuitive for the target audience. The result is undoubtedly greater freedom of movement.
This is how visitors to trade fairs can now teleport themselves, open information content and load/unload goods from MSC cargo ships using only their hands.
